In the News, part 12

by J.J. Lewsac

One of the most frightening ordeals one could go through would be as the victim in an armed robbery. Such was the case for a couple of store clerks in a liquor store in Temple Hills, Maryland.

According to the story by Fox5 two individuals walked into the store. They were not wearing masks, hoodies, or anything else that might give away their intentions. After several minutes of browsing the store they approached the counter casually. That is when one of the individuals circled around the counter, pulled a gun out, and held it to one of the clerk’s heads.

The suspects then forced the clerks into the back room to take the money.

“Anybody who is desperate enough to display a handgun in broad daylight and try to attempt an armed robbery is a desperate person who needs money for one reason or another. Desperate people are always dangerous,” said Corporal Evan Baxter, of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

The surveillance footage can be seen in the local news stations story, here:

Thankfully no one was hurt, and police are searching for the suspects based on the surveillance footage. Yet this seems to be another case where a cheap camera system could hurt any further investigation. Had the store utilized higher resolution cameras, the faces of the suspects could be more clearly seen, and people watching the newscast could potentially identify the robbers.

People looking to get a surveillance camera should learn from these videos. Ask yourself a simple question. “Would I feel comfortable with this kind of video quality to protect my family or property?” If the answer is “no”, adjust your budget accordingly to incorporate better cameras, and purchase a surveillance system that is worth its weight. As always in the world of electronics, you get what you pay for.
